What is Surf Lifesaving?
Surf Lifesaving combines swimming, board paddling, surf skiing, sand running and rescue skills in a competitive environment. Through surf lifesaving, athletes develop speed, endurance, teamwork and essential ocean rescue skills. Training and competing prepares athletes to respond confidently in the water, equipping them with the knowledge and abilities needed to take action in a rescue situation and potentially save a life.
Surf lifesaving events include:
400m Surf swim - a swim race held in the ocean
600m Board race - a paddle race using a rescue board
800m Surf ski race - a paddle race using a surf ski
Oceanman/oceanwoman - a multi-discipline event combining a 400 swim, 600m board race, 800m surf ski race with running transitions between each leg
90m beach sprint - a sprint race on the sand
Beach flags - a competitive beach sprint event highlighting reaction time, speed and agility
Ocean and beach relays - team-based events that combine all of the above skills with additional lifesaving techniques and teamwork
